Ready for ‘snow’ much fun? Make plans to getaway to Galena, where the blankets of white over our hills and valleys make it the true winter wonderland in Illinois. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing along Galena’s nature trails are the perfect ways to enjoy the outdoors when Jack Frost has come to visit, and Bernadine’s Stillman Inn is the perfect place to stay. Here’s why:
You can choose to snowshoe or cross-country ski free on the public Galena River Trails beginning in town near our B&B. If you haven’t snowshoed through the woods before, don’t worry… if you can walk, you can snowshoe, no lessons required! The tree-lined Galena River Trail South begins near the Galena Boat Landing and follows close to the Galena River for 3.5 miles. The Galena River Trail North begins near the Galena Visitor’s Center and follows the River north through town and along the levy to the Beuhler Preserve. Including a loop through the Preserve, you’ll trek about three miles round trip. Our newest public preserve, Casper Bluff Land and Water Reserve, is less than a 15 minute drive from the Inn. That Preserve offers back country skiing and snowshoeing through the forest and across meadows to the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River.
If you prefer groomed trails and a greater variety of snowy fun, the Nordic Center at Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa offers seven miles of groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, plus sledding, ice skating on its 1.5 acre pond, and a bonfire nearby to help you stay warm. It’s only 6 miles east of our Inn along the shores of Lake Galena. The Nordic Center partners with Fever River Outfitters of Galena, which offers ski, snowshoe, and ice skate rentals, group snowshoe hikes, and XC ski lessons. Visit their website for additional background information, upcoming winter events, and to reserve equipment (recommended). Other winter fun locations within driving distance of Galena are Mississippi Palisades (cross-country skiing and sledding) and nature trails near Dubuque, IA.
After a day exploring our wintry trails, you’ll be ready to return to our warm and cozy Inn. We know you’ll have worked up an appetite, too, so why not take advantage of our offer of a $50 dinner coupon at a select restaurant when you book a two night midweek stay during January or February. Snowflakes will be falling, so don’t wait to give us a call or book online!
